TSSA certificates, not Skilled Trades Ontario

Ontario fuel industry certificates

Gas, propane and oil heat work in Ontario is certified by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority under O. Reg. 215/01, separately from the skilled trades system. The regulation prescribes 34 certificate classes. Certificates are biennial, exams are administered by TSSA, and working without the required certificate is an offence. This registry now carries a record for every one of the 34 classes.

Refrigerants: a different regulator again

Handling refrigerants is certified under environmental law rather than the Technical Standards and Safety Act. The Ozone Depletion Prevention (ODP) card is required to purchase and handle refrigerants in Ontario, is earned through a one-day course, and renews every five years.

How TSSA certificates differ from trade certification

Skilled Trades Ontario certifies trades such as plumber (306A) and sheet metal worker (308A) under the Building Opportunities in the Skilled Trades Act. Fuel certificates are a separate system under the Technical Standards and Safety Act, and many jobs need both: a residential HVAC installer typically holds a G.2 gas technician certificate alongside their trade qualification. See the trade certification directory for the trades side.
